But on the bright side, Malaysia’s renewable energy development is growing. Currently, 8% of the country’s energy is from renewable sources, and the government has pledged to increase that percentage to 20% by 2025.

Additionally, Scatec financed the 197MW Quantum Solar Park in Malaysia, which was Scatec’s first large-scale solar project in Southeast Asia. 

Other solar projects include the Gebeng Solar Park and a private investment project in Johor, which is a solar power plant with a 450MW capacity. This 450MW plant is currently under construction still, and it is expected to be fully operational by 2023. 

Even though Malaysia’s solar development is still young, the country has seen growth in its solar capacity throughout the years. In 2012, the capacity was only 25MW, but in 2020, it rose to 1,493MW.
