7 Questions You Need to Ask Before Starting Solar Light Project

When you install a traditional commercial solar street light, you don’t often need to be concerned with whether it will be “bright” enough or will operate continuously because there is an expectation that it will work as specified. You trench, lay cables, connect to the utility, and bam—you have light!

However, if you’re looking to avoid the costly and time-consuming trenching option and you’d rather not pay any ongoing power costs, then a properly-sized modern commercial solar lighting system is a fantastic option. While a solar-powered commercial light can achieve the same lighting results as a traditional light, there are a few specific things you will need to evaluate to ensure you get the right results.

Why are we asking these questions?

  • Avoid overspending: ensure the lighting system will use properly-sized components for your project needs vs. having an unnecessarily large and expensive system to compensate for poor design.
  • Avoid battery replacements or auto shut-off: install an efficient system that will be able to sustain your light requirements over the long term vs. one that dims the lights, leads to premature failure of the battery, or shuts the lights off completely.

Q1. Ask About The Project Location

What is the exact location of the project? Try to get an accurate street address and site description whenever possible.

Why? This allows the manufacturers to factor solar insolation data into their system design.

Different areas receive different amounts of sunlight each day. For example, a solar light specified for sunny, southern Los Angeles would be smaller and therefore wouldn’t be able to generate enough power to provide continuous light for Anchorage, Alaska. And a solar light specified for Anchorage would be unnecessarily large for Los Angeles.

Knowing the project location allows the manufacturers to build and specify their systems for your exact location and to avoid proposing a system that’s too small or too large for your area.

Also, a street address can allow for the assessment of potential shading hazards—like trees, buildings, or other obstructions—which could block the solar panel from the sun and decrease your system’s performance.

Q2. Ask About The Project Application

What kind of area are you trying to illuminate? Knowing the basic street type vs. pathway will change the lighting output requirement.

Why? The application may affect pole height, pole spacing, and light level requirements. A street, for example, will probably require higher light levels than a trail or park. Here are some possible applications:

  • Shared Pathway
  • Residential street
  • Recreational Reserve
  • Car Park
  • Thoroughfares
  • The entryway to a building

Q3. Ask About The Project Dimensions

What is the length of the street/pathway or the size of the general area (for a parking lot, etc.)?

Why? The size or length of the area will affect the number of lighting systems required, and the uniformity of the light hitting the ground, which all factors into the overall project cost.

Q4. Ask About The Pole Details

Is there a specified pole height? What type of pole is required?

Why? Pole height may affect the number of lighting systems required for the project. Pole type may affect the installation costs.

Q5. Ask About The Required Light Levels And Uniformity

Is there a state/municipal standard for light levels for the project, what are they? What light levels need to be met on the ground (measured by foot candles or lux)? What uniformity requirements are there if known?

Why? Different applications will require different light levels, which plays a large role in determining the overall project cost.

Q6. Ask About The Operating Profile

How long does the light need to be on each night? When the light is on, do the light levels need to be met throughout the night or at certain times? If you’re unsure, a good manufacturer should be able to help.

Why? The operating profile is a crucial aspect of a solar lighting project. Manufacturers will “tune” their systems differently for power management, based on these profiles.

Here are some examples of operating profiles:

  • Dusk to dawn (all-night operation): the light will run at the same light output level all night.
  • Dim in off-peak hours: for example, the light will run at the required light output level for 5 hours after dusk, then dim to 30% of the required light level. 2 hours before dawn, the light levels will return to 100% until sunrise.
  • Off or dimmed at an exact time: for example, the light will run at the required light output level until 11 p.m., then will turn off.

Q7. Ask About The Color Temperature

What color of light is required—warmer (3000K) or cooler (6000K)?

Why? Color temperature affects the fixture power output and can factor into the project cost. While the light color temperature may be more of a preference than a requirement, cities are leaning more towards lights with warmer color temperatures as they seem to be better for our health and the environment.

In Summary

Asking these questions can ensure you’re specified a solar light that will meet your project requirements over the long term at no extra cost. You can also be confident that your lighting system won’t die prematurely or become unnecessarily large, and expensive.

Industrial Solar Street Light project in Dubai analysis

Dubai is a district known for its abundance of oil, and burning oil has been its primary source of electricity. However, as both the oil prices and the electricity demand increased, the government has turned to the notion of solar power so that solar street lights will have a huge market in Dubai in the future.

Dubai is also one of the largest developers of solar street lighting systems in the United Arab Emirates. Recently, they decided to install 500 pieces of integrated solar street lights in an industrial area, with some manufacturers in the city’s main areas. Often exploited at night by families due to extreme weather conditions in summer, they are very popular. Dubai has a mission: to be a city at the forefront in terms of renewable energy. Thus, it is obvious that the parks could only be lit by solar energy.

Dubai has a hot desert climate. Summers in Dubai are extremely hot, prolonged, windy, and humid, with an average high of around 40 °C (104 °F) and overnight lows of around 30 °C (86 °F) in the hottest month, August. Most days are sunny throughout the year. Winters are comparatively cool, though mild to warm, with an average high of 24 °C (75 °F) and overnight lows of 14 °C (57 °F) in January, it is very suitable for installing solar street lights.

500 pieces of government industrial all-in-one solar street lights project, completed in May 2022 in Dubai by Clodesun.

2024 Guidance of Solar Street Light Design Caculation

Solar street light is charged by solar panel in the daytime and work at night, there is a built-in lithium battery, and different solar panel and battery configuration can meet different illumination requirement. In this article, Clodesun will introduce the solar street light design calculation.

            SOLAR led STREET LIGHT

            Solar Street lights Battery Design

            Step 1, calculate the current:

For example 12V battery system; 60 watts solar street light power.

            Current(A) = 60W ÷ 12V = 5 A

            Calculate the battery capacity demand:

            For example, the cumulative lighting time of a street lamp every night needs to be 7 hours (H) with a full load;

            (for example, open at 8:00 p.m., close 1 road at 11:30 p.m., open 2 roads at 4:30 a.m., and close at 5:30 a.m.)

It needs to meet the lighting requirements of 5 consecutive rainy days. (5 days plus the night before the rainy day, 6 days in total)

            Battery capacity = 5A × 7h × (5 + 1) days = 5A × 42h = 210 ah

Calculation of solar street lamp solar panel

3: Calculate the peak demand (WP) of the solar panel

            The cumulative lighting time of the street lamp every night needs to be 7 hours (H);

            ★: the average daily effective illumination time of the solar panel is 4-5 hours (H);

At least 20% of the reserved amount for the solar panel needs to be reserved.
the rated power of the LED lamp in a solar streetlight is 30W at 12V.

            LED brightness at night will be set as 1 hour 60% + 5 hours 100% + 6 hours 40%

3 days of autonomy, in other ways, it can support 3 rainy/cloudy days

battery type is LiFePO4 batteries, the DoD would be 80%

Step 2: Calculate the daily energy consumption of the LED lamp

the current consumption of the LED lamp = 30/12 = 2.5Amps

the total power consumption in a day = 8 hours at 100% brightness

            so the daily power consumption = 2.5 x 8 = 20Ah.

Step 3: Considering the 3 days’ autonomy
if we design solar-powered streetlights that can sustain for 3 rainy/cloudy days, then we should multiply daily power consumption by days of autonomy

            that will be, 20Ah x 3 = 60Ah.

Step 4: Considering the depth of discharge.

in this example, our battery type is LiFePO4, and Its DoD is 80%

so the battery size should be 60Ah/80% = 75Ah

Solar Street Light Solar Panel Design

The electricity generated by solar panels should be used to make up for the electricity that was used last night, and at the same time, the electricity to be used tonight should be fully charged, that is,

Solar panel power generation = daily power consumption * 2

Solar panel power generation = solar panel power * installation site sunshine peak hours * power generation efficiency

Solar panel power=daily power consumption*2/(peak hours of sunshine at installation location*generation efficiency)

The peak sunshine hours of the installation site can also be found on the Internet, we will take 4 (most places are around 4 hours unless other places with particularly good sunshine can reach 5 hours).

The power generation efficiency of solar systems is generally 70-75%.

Solar Street Light Pole Height Design

The height of the solar power street light directly affects the illumination range of the led lamps. The higher the light pole, the wider the illumination range according to the Pythagorean theorem.

Scenic spots and parks are generally suitable for installing solar power street lights of about 7 meters, At night, the traffic of pedestrians and vehicles on rural roads is not large, so it is generally installed by one-sided interactive lighting, and the installation distance is about 20-25 meters. If it is less than 20 meters, part of the lighting will be affected. In addition, one more street light should be installed at the corner to avoid lighting blind spots.

            palm tree solar street light

solar power street light installation 3D photometric drawing

If you want to install a solar power street light with a pole height of 8 meters, you must ensure that the distance between the street lights is 25-30 meters. You should use the cross-lighting method for installation on both sides. This method is mostly used for road lighting with a width of 10 -15 meters.

For roads with 12-meter light poles, the longitudinal spacing of solar power street lights is generally recommended to be 30-50 meters. Symmetrical lighting on both sides should be used, and the road lighting width needs to exceed 15 meters.

            Solar Street Lighting  Installation Design?

Different countries and regions have different geographic locations and latitudes. and we may set different battery capacities and solar panel sizes for the solar streetlights. When people install solar street lights someplace, on one side, the solar panel can face the sun directly, but on the other side, the solar panel can not face the sun, so if the solar panel can be adjustable, it will absorb more solar energy, which can maximize the conversion of solar energy while the lower quality solar led street light panel is fixed, causing low conversion rate of solar and the using areas are also limited, so when we design solar street light project, we need to confirm that the sun can face the solar panel on both side of the road

And we also need to consider the amount of traffic or activity in the area that needs illumination. For example, if solar street lights are installed on highways or airports, the traffic of people and vehicles is very busy and the lighting illuminations are relatively high. For example, especially on the highway, the client usually requires 100% 12 hours at night and last 3-4 rainy days. Conventional solar street lights can not meet the lighting requirements. then we need to consider enlarging the size of the solar panel and the capacity of the battery, another method is to increase the capacity of the solar street light battery and reduce the power of the LED.

When solar street lights are installed in parks and village roads, the traffic of people is not very busy, and the illumination requirements are not high. The government can consider using conventional solar street lights at this time in order to save costs and energy.

            Conclusion

Before we start a solar street light project, we need to know the factors that affect the working solar power street light system, Like the width and lanes of the road, Lux level, working hours per day, local sunshine conditions, average continuous rainy days, and the highest or lowest environment temperature. With these conditions, a scientific and reasonable solar power system can be designed.

Microprocessors in Philips solar street lights determine sunset and sunrise using algorithms. Because of the A-brand quality crystalline silicon solar panel, it is efficient and durable.

Its maximum efficiency can be attributed to its high-luminance LED module. Low-voltage solar controllers are known for being able to dim lights to conserve energy (electricity). Energy is stored in discharge batteries for use when needed, as well as ensuring that there is a backup power source in case of inclement weather.

Solar panels convert solar energy from the sun into electrical energy which is stored in batteries during the day. As the battery discharges during the night, electrical energy is released to power the LED luminaire. The solar hybrid input will be activated automatically if the battery is not sufficiently charged or if it drains throughout the night.

Main Advantages of Philips Solar Street Light

Solar street lights from Phillips operate independently; therefore, they have low operation costs. According to this, this type of street lighting is not connected to the electric grid and is a wireless light.

Lighting depends on heat energy from the sun, and streetlights store much solar energy during daylight hours. Solar street lights are less complicated to maintain and risk overheating than conventional street lights.

By not having external wires on the solar wires, accidents have been minimized during installation. Electrocution or strangulation can be the result. It is environmentally friendly because Philips solar street lights are solar-powered; hence, they do not contribute to carbon footprints.

It has become an efficient and handy solution to lighting difficulties due to certain solar street lighting systems’ simplicity of transportation.

Within the first five hours of the night, the system performs at medium brightness. As the intensity of light decreases, the PIR sensor is activated by the movement of humans or until dawn.

If it senses movement within a certain radius of the luminaire, it automatically turns on the full brightness.

Solar outdoor luminaires require virtually no maintenance in comparison to conventional street lights.

Main Disadvantages of Philips Solar Street Light

Philips street light is more expensive compared to conventional street lights. This is the major reason why some people have never considered buying it.

Rather than considering the benefits of solar streetlights in the long term, they think about the cost. Their non-wired nature makes their theft a high risk.

A high monetary value makes them more susceptible to theft than traditional streetlights, which are low in value. It is possible to accumulate moisture, snow, and dust on the horizontal PV panels.

The result could be a reduction in energy production or even the cessation of it entirely. It is important to check the Philips solar street light regularly, particularly if it is installed in a location with severe weather conditions that can shorten or damage its life.

There are rechargeable batteries that need to be replaced now and then within the lifetime of the fixture. The total cost of the lighting system increases as a result. Battery maintenance costs include replacing rechargeable batteries, since they may be exhausted like some components.

Philips solar streetlights offer both advantages and disadvantages, so an objective evaluation of their overall benefits is your responsibility. Determine whether it is worthwhile to purchase them. Despite this, Philips solar street lights tend to be more popular; therefore, you need to give them a try.

                  Summary

In regions where power outages are common, solar and solar hybrid street lights excel. Crime can be deterred and communities can be made safer and more resilient.

In the end, solar lighting is an accessible, efficient, and future-proof solution to community development that could contribute greatly to global economic recovery both on and off the continent. More than 1 billion people on Earth have no access to electricity after sunset, which is about 17% of the global population. Investing in lighting technology that enhances lives and enhances communities is at the core of Philips Lighting’s mission.

Solar street light with automatic motion sensor

Solar street light with automatic motion sensor

Highway solar street lights project in Saudi Arabia, completed in 2022. 500units of 100W & 120W CF Series all-in-one solar street lights are applied in this project. Excellent patentin integrated design makes it very easy to install and maintain. Intelligence MPPT controller realizes intelligent street lighting control. Motion sensor makes the lamps save electricity more effectively. The solar street light with automatic motion sensor could work continuously for 5-7 autonomy days under smart mode.

There are three working modes of solar street lights as follows.

                  1. Solar street light with a Time Control

The MPPT controller also initiates the dimming action and light intensity of the solar street light. For example, at certain times of the day, the LED light can project varying amounts of illumination as illustrated below.

                  From 6 pm to 7 pm – 70% brightness
                  From 8 pm to 10 pm – 100% brightness
                  From 11 pm to 5 pm – 30% brightness
When the sensor detects people, it will automatically turn to 100% brightness even at any time of the night. Thus, energy usage is conserved.

                  2. Solar street light with Motion sensor

Motion sensors can either be microwave or infrared. An infrared motion sensor detects heat from objects or people while microwave sensors let bounced signals enter the sensor.

The motion sensor is capable of detecting people up to a certain distance before opening the LED light. This can be a 5m to 6 m of distance.

Solar street lights with automatic motion sensors light outdoors turn 100% brightness mode in 2 seconds when motion is detected; it reverts back to 30% energy saving mode again if people are out.

                  3. Solar street light with PIR sensor

Infrared induction uses the principle of pyroelectric exploration, which triggers streetlights by sensing the temperature changes in the environment. Once the human body or other objects emitting infrared energy enter the range, it will react. The sensing distance is only 3-5m. When someone passes by, the infrared sensor is triggered, and the light automatically turns on the strong light mode, and the strong light generally lasts for 30 seconds. When a person leaves the sensing range, the light automatically switches to the dim mode, waits for the next time someone approaches, and then adjusts the bright mode.

With the advantages of smart solar LED street lamps, we could not only save a lot of energy but also not need to worry about electricity failure anymore.
